What is blepharoptosis?
Blepharoptosis is the condition which the eyelid margin of one or both eye is lower than normal. Can be diagnosed by using penlight and see if the corneal light reflex is too close to the upper eyelid margin. Normal value between 2 red line in Asia is 3-5 mm.
What to know about blepharoptosis
Blepharoptosis is the most common eyelid disease. If severe enough, can obscure vision.
There are 5 main cause of blepharoptosis: from aging change, since birth, from nerve paralysis, from muscle
disease and from mechanical traction to the eyelid
To find cause of the disease, patient need to be examined by an eye doctor and sometimes need further investigations. The most common cause of blepharoptosis is from aging change and usually gradually occur to both eyes. If blepharoptosis occur suddenly, especially accompany with headaches or eye pain, urgent medical consultation is recommended.
Treatment: Blepharoptosis can be corrected by eyelid surgery. There are 3 main options: frontalis muscle surgery, levator muscle surgery and Mueller's muscle surgery, depend on severity of the disease and levator muscle function.
What is the different between blepharoptosis and double eyelid surgery?
Double eyelid surgery focus mainly on create an eyelid crease on the skin, not to lift the eyelid margin (no.2 on figure).
For blepharoptosis correction, the main goal of the operation is to lift the eyelid margin and can be achieved only by tightening the muscle that function to lift the eye (no.1 on figure).
Symptoms of blepharoptosis patient : loss of superior visual field, corneal astigmatism,
decrease vision at night
Blepharoptosis correction is the procedure of tightening the muscle that function to lift the eyelid. These muscles lie deep inside the eyelid, just anterior to the eyeball. The operation time is 30-45 minutes per eyelid. This is a minor operation and the patient can go home on the same day.
